Ah, Kolkata! The city of kathi rolls and kosha mangsho, a land where seafood sizzles and meat melts in your mouth. But hold on, my vegetarian friends!
Before you give up and order yourself another round of paneer paratha (though let's be honest, it's divine 😋), Kolkata has a secret up its sleeve – a vibrant, delectable vegetarian breakfast and street food scene waiting to be explored.
From traditional Bengali delights to global cuisines with a vegetarian twist, Kolkata caters to every food lover out there!
Did you know Kolkata has over 500 vegetarian restaurants? 🤯
Infact, the city's oldest breakfast joint, Paramount, is a vegetarian haven!
Now ditch the stereotypes, ditch the expectations, and grab your stretchy pants – we're on a veg food adventure!
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and so is indulging in street food ( to be honest and practical 😛 ) and Kolkata's vegetarian food scene is nothing short of spectacular. Forget your boring toast and cereal; here, you can indulge in luchi ghugni, club kachori, scrumptious rolls, bengali sweets, puchka, parathas, puri sabzi, south indian food, vada pao, pav bhaji, chinese, chai, coffee, english breakfast, jhal muri, and more! (Feeling hungry again as I type this 🫣)
And I noticed something really interesting in Kolkata, the luchi (puri) has no oil dripping from it, you can’t even spot oil on it and it feels so light to eat! Not only the luchi, the sabzi too looks and feels oil-free. It feels so light on your stomach that you indulge in a lot of them 😛
Unlike the one’s which we get in my hometown where I’ve to take a tissue and wipe off the oil first before eating the puri!
Here are a few places which I visited on my 5 day trip to Kolkata with a map link to their location so you can easily save them on your maps and refer to it later while planning your trip ;)
Note that some places are not on google maps so I have shared an approximate location. These are my personal finds which I think may not have been shared yet (at least a few of them) in terms of vegetarian food options in Kolkata!

Which veg dish is famous in Kolkata?
Well why not try it all and decide for ourselves 🤪
Personal favourite for sweets and luchi !
Note that this is in Liluah and not main Kolkata but quite worth the visit!
Sharma Tea House - Club kachori, kesar tea, jalebi & more!
Kusum Roll's People stand in long queues here to have the variety of rolls available here! If you are the kind of vegetarian who has eggs 🙄, the egg rolls here are quite famous!
Putiram Sweets (personal favourite) The breakfast menu here changed 2 times when we visited here on 3 different days and on all the days it was tasty! Loved the dhokla, singhara (samosa) here too and the sweets were quite good! Not too sweet, with just the perfect amount of sweetness in them.
Nahoum and Sons Private Limited Confectioners Take out time for this one because this bakery is quite popular amongst the locals and the tourists for it's scrumptious offerings. I'd given up because I literally saw a line of what looked like 0.4 - 0.5 km but try them out and know why they are so famous! I've had cake from here before so I skipped it this time, still regret it.. maybe 5% regret.. or 95%.. we'll never know 😛
Kona Dukan The quintessential break time snacks! Visit here for the vibe of this place and this area and don't forget to try my next suggestion!
Street Food around Fairly, Eastern Railway Head office. Don't barge in the office, I've just added the location so that you know the area I am talking about 😛
Indian Coffee House I mean, do I even have to write about it? It must be the first place to visit on your list already!
Flurys Same for Flurys, everyone visits it on their trip to Kolkata!
Puchka (pani-puri), scrumptious chaats at Puchka Corner (It is in new market area, not available on google maps but this is the approximate location 👍
Jhal muri - available easily anywhere in Kolkata
Also must try - shaakalu (a kind of sweet potato) and few new fruits - jamrul (Java apple), rose apple which I saw here in the new market area and across the city! The rose apple fruit seriously tasted like rose! It was costly, Rs 50 for 1 piece but tasted so good!
South Indian food at Humayun place road.
Vada pao, pav bhaji and more street food at college street
Mishti dahi anywhere in Kolkata!
I must say that if I could try these many places just on a short visit to Kolkata, imagine how many anyone could find and enjoy if they stay for at least a week or more 🤌🏻
